Netflix will develop 55 additional games for Android or iOS

In: Social Media

The company is working to expand its game library, including the mobile version of Into The Breach Advanced Edition.

Netflix’s relatively new gaming section was launched at the end of 2021. In 2022, the company began to expand its library of games, including the mobile version of Into The Breach Advanced Edition. It seems that Netflix does not just want ports but also wants to create original games.

According to Netflix’s Q3 investor letters and a TechCrunch Disrupt event, 55 games are currently under development. Some of the games are based on Netflix IPs. The company is also looking to generate attention across media formats. An example Netflix cites is the synergy between Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077, as the anime brought viewers-turned-players over to CD Projekt Red’s other games.

Netflix claims it is seeing “some encouraging signals of gameplay leading to higher retention.” A report from Netflix revealed that only 1% of its subscribers have ever ventured into the gaming section as far back as August 2022.

Netflix is opening new studios and buying existing ones to develop original games. Chacko Sonny, who was involved in Overwatch and God of War is now opening a new Netflix studio. It is not known what games Sonny will be leading. Netflix recently purchased Oxenfree Night School Studios, an Oxenfree developer studio. It currently has five studios.

Netflix said it was also “very seriously considering” a cloud-gaming service similar to the Amazon Luna or the now-defunct Google Stadia.
